After interviewing some of my family members I realized how much we love each other and how much we are so different. One of the most shocking things I found out was that my brother had always wanted children. My brother and his wife have been married for 15 years, but unfortunately they never could have children. I asked him why didn't they just adopt? He told me that during the first few years of their marriage they did not want to adopt. He went on to said that they are too old to adopt now. They are both in their late 40's and they don't want to feel like they are starting over.
When I was looking into my father's side of the family I did not realize there were so many of my aunts who were domestic workers. I had to remind myself that times were different for African American women back then and that getting an education was not a choice. I have always known that my father's side were musically inclined and that he, two of his brothers and a cousin formed a gospel group called The Traveling Souls. Back during the early 70's, a few years after my father passed away, I remember watching the group perform on TV, unfortunately I do not remember the show they were on, but it was a local channel in Dallas. Since this assignment I have been trying to find that program. It would be nice if someone could give me some ideas as to where I might can find it. I have already looked on YouTube.
I do not have one of those inspiring stories as to why I want to become a counselor and this interview has not changed that, but I do know I have always wanted to help children. This is evident in the number of years I have spent helping children. I would like to expand my counseling experience and help adults as well.
